Today, 18 january 2012, is a day that we’ll live in ignorance. Many Internet sites have begun 24- and 12-hour blackouts in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) in the Senate.

Internet companies (including Google, Wikipedia, Firefox, Wordpress, Reddit and Creative Commons, among others) are concerned that SOPA and PIPA, if passed, could be used to target legitimate sites where users share content.

The juxtaposition of these two distinctly different discussions about social media provides insight into what frightens most newbies about getting on board.

Most adopters (specifically older ones) are looking for an ease-in, explained with simple language to get a feel for the platforms and plot their course accordingly. Too often newbies get confused and overwhelmed by language and how-tos.

The Theory article was forwarded to me by a client claiming “here’s what I hear when people talk about social media” and The Practice is an article I sent back to put social media in perspective as used by real people and businesses.
