The Anti-Censorship Collective: Who Went Dark Today & Why

Today, 18 january 2012, is a day that we’ll live in ignorance. Many Internet sites have begun 24- and 12-hour blackouts in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) in the Senate.

Internet companies (including Google, Wikipedia, Firefox, Wordpress, Reddit and Creative Commons, among others) are concerned that SOPA and PIPA, if passed, could be used to target legitimate sites where users share content.

Tech, Type & Twitter Weekend Wrapup

An unintended, busy weekend provided several noteworthy experiences and debate-worthy information.

Friday night at Carnegie Hall (in Zankel Hall), I attended the WSJ tech talk featuring Sir Howard Stringer, CEO Sony, and Walt Mossberg, the Wall Street Journal’s personal tech columnist. The posted theme shifted in light of the events in Japan. It was interesting to hear the Sony response to the horrific events from their CEO, who is not Japanese, and how they affected both the people and the operations of this multinational corporation. 5 Wonderers of the World at TED 2011

TED2011 is less than a month away. I took a look at this year’s program. It is spectacular in its creativity, diversity, and its ability to inspire – aptly titled The Rediscovery of Wonder. There’s are so many great voices, I am looking forward to hearing them all. But these are my five can’t-wait-to-watch videos, once they get posted.

From absurd amounts of knowledge to expansive exploration, these five characters piqued my curiosity and spurred my own creative rediscovery. (more…)
